Hi, I’m Heather

I’m the trainer behind NC Puppy Coach & Behavior Consulting — and I help overwhelmed dog owners create calmer, more enjoyable lives with their dogs through compassionate, practical training that actually fits real life.

For more than 20 years, I’ve worked with dogs and their families in training, behavior, veterinary, rescue and grooming settings. Over the years, I noticed something important: many dog owners weren’t failing because they didn’t care enough — they were struggling because they felt unsupported, judged, confused, or stuck trying to follow one-size-fits-all advice that didn’t work for their dog.

That’s why I built NC Puppy Coach differently.

My approach combines behavior science, clear communication, practical coaching, and emotional support for both ends of the leash. Whether you’re raising a brand-new puppy, navigating adolescence, or dealing with frustrating behavior challenges that feel bigger than you expected, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

I work with clients virtually across the United States through personalized 1-on-1 coaching designed to give you real support, real answers, and real progress.

How My Training Works

Training with me is not about forcing obedience or one-size-fits-all methods. It’s about addressing the underlying cause of your dog’s behavior issues, improving communication, and creating long-term behavior change in a way that feels sustainable for both you and your dog.

Every program is customized to your dog’s personality, your goals, your lifestyle, and the challenges you’re facing. We work together step-by-step so you always understand why we’re doing something — not just what to do.

My virtual coaching programs include:

  • Personalized training plans

  • Live 1-on-1 virtual coaching sessions (on google meet or zoom)

  • Ongoing support between sessions

  • Troubleshooting and progress adjustments

  • Practical real-life training strategies

  • Guidance for both behavior and daily management

Because sessions happen virtually, we can work directly in your real environment : your home, your neighborhood, your routines, and your daily challenges. That often leads to better consistency, better follow-through, and faster real-world results.

Why Virtual Dog Training?

Many people are surprised to learn how effective virtual dog training can be. But in reality, dogs learn best in the environments where their behavior actually happens.

Because sessions take place in your home and daily routines, we’re able to work on real-life challenges in real time. Instead of your dog behaving perfectly in a training facility and struggling again once they get home, virtual coaching helps create skills that transfer directly into everyday life.

Virtual training also allows me to coach you more effectively. During sessions, I can observe your dog’s body language, environment, routines, timing, and handling skills while guiding you step-by-step in the moment. This creates a more collaborative learning experience and helps owners feel more confident and capable between sessions.

For many dogs — especially puppies, anxious dogs, reactive dogs, or dogs who become overstimulated around new people or environments — virtual training can actually lead to faster progress because the dog is learning in a familiar, lower-stress setting.

Virtual coaching is often an excellent fit for:

  • Busy families needing flexible scheduling

  • Puppies learning household routines

  • Stranger aggression or reactivity

  • Separation anxiety

  • Fearful or anxious dogs

  • Multi-dog households

  • Owners who want ongoing support and accountability

  • Clients outside their local training area

It also allows for more consistent support between lessons. Instead of relying only on one in-person session each week, clients receive guidance, troubleshooting, and adjustments as challenges come up in real life.

The goal isn’t to make your dog dependent on a trainer being physically present. It’s to help you develop the skills, confidence, and understanding needed to successfully work with your dog long-term.

Who I Work With

I work with puppy and dog owners who want more than quick fixes or generic advice.

Some of my clients are first-time puppy owners who want to start off on the right foot and avoid future behavior problems.

Others come to me feeling exhausted, frustrated, embarrassed, or discouraged after struggling with behavior challenges for months, sometimes even years.

I commonly help with:

  • Puppy training and socialization

  • Potty training

  • Biting and nipping

  • Jumping and impulse control

  • Leash pulling and reactivity

  • Fearful or anxious behavior

  • Separation anxiety

  • Multi-dog household challenges

  • Vet and grooming stress

  • Adolescent behavior changes

  • Aggression and complex behavior cases

Many of my clients have previously worked with other trainers and still felt like something was missing . Whether that was support, clarity, customization, compassion, or a plan that truly fit their dog.

If you’re committed to helping your dog and willing to put in the work, I’m here to help guide you through it without judgment.

There are a lot of dog trainers out there.

What makes my approach different is the level of individualized support, problem-solving, and relationship-building I bring to every client.

I don’t believe in shaming owners, blaming dogs, or pretending behavior change is always simple. Real life is messy and good training should account for that.

When you work with me, you’re not just getting training exercises. You’re getting a coach who:

  • Takes time to understand the full picture

  • Explains things clearly and realistically

  • Helps you troubleshoot challenges as they happen

  • Adjusts the plan when needed

  • Supports both your dog’s emotional wellbeing and your own

  • Focuses on long-term success, not just short-term compliance

I also bring experience working with complex behavior cases that many trainers avoid, suppress, or rush through. My goal is always to help you make meaningful progress while building trust, confidence, and better communication with your dog.

Because at the end of the day, training isn’t just about creating a “well-behaved dog.” It’s about helping you enjoy life together again.

Whether you’re preparing for life with a new puppy or struggling with behaviors that feel overwhelming, support is available.

I’d love to help you and your dog move forward with more clarity, confidence, and calm.
